Professor Law, Simon Ying Kit 羅英傑
Simon Law graduated from the University of Cambridge in England. He received his postgraduate training at the Department of Surgery of The University of Hong Kong then furthered his training in foregut surgery by undertaking a Fellowship at the University of Southern California. He became a Clinical Professor in Surgery in 2005. He is currently Cheung Kung-Hai Professor in Gastrointestinal Surgery, Chair Professor and Chief of Esophageal and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery at The University of Hong Kong.
Professor Law has concentrated his clinical experience and research on benign and malignant disorders of the upper gastrointestinal tract, emphasising esophageal and gastric cancers, motility disorders, and gastro-esophageal reflux disease. In particular, he focuses on various endoscopic diagnostic and treatment techniques for foregut diseases, surgical methods including minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgery, and multimodality treatments of esophageal and gastric cancers.
He served as a Council Member of the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong and was the Chairman of the General Surgery Board, the Chief Examiner for the Joint Fellowship Examination of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and The College of Surgeons of Hong Kong. He is also the past president of the Hong Kong Society of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons. He was a member of the Education and Accreditation Committee of the Medical Council of Hong Kong. Internationally, he has been playing an active role in many international societies; such as Consultant of the International Society of Digestive Surgery (ISDS), Asia Representative of the Member Services Committee of the Society for Surgeons of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT), National Delegate of the International Society of Surgeons (ISS), and Secretary of the Hong Kong China Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. Notably, for international collaborations, he is a member of the World Wide Esophageal Cancer Collaboration, the Esophagectomy Complications Consensus Group, and a member drafting the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Society recommendations for esophagectomy. He was Co-Chairman of the Education Committee of the International Society of Diseases of the Esophagus (ISDE), and the current President-Elect of the same society.
Professor Law has been a sustained contributor to high-impact international journals. He has published over 310 articles, and 43 book chapters, including those in Mastery of Surgery, Maingot’s Abdominal Operations, Pearson’s Thoracic and Esophageal Surgery and Shackelford’s Surgery of the Alimentary Tract. He is associate editor of the Diseases of the Esophagus and is/has been editor to other leading surgical publications such as Annals of Surgery, Surgery, JAMA Surgery, Annals of Surgical Oncology, and World Journal of Surgery. He is regularly invited to deliver lectures worldwide. He is an honorary fellow of the American Surgical Association, the oldest and most prestigious surgical society in North America. He is also an honorary member of the European Surgical Association.
